On a scale without scale

Marcel Ferencz divided the basic body of the perfect cubic shape into a (almost) perfect group of nine-spaced space forms.

 

Focus. The dynamically developing new campus of the city's university is located on Kassai út, leading north-east from the historical settlement of Debrecen, on the site of the former barracks. The historic buildings of the former administrative and barracks blocks are located along the main road, and inside the classroom is a classically proportioned building with a new function - in addition to their new function blocks, new and newer university buildings grow in the conceptually pre-furnished park.

Behind the plot complex of a smaller part of the city, an area dotted with smaller family houses and larger villas stretches in the direction of the Great Forest, in the northern part the neighborhood of the Phoenix Hall shows the gigantic urban scale change. The demonstrative building cube of the research center is located in the lane next to the block of flats. The scale of the larger family house, smaller villa building area and mass ratio is modeled, (fortunately) ignoring the new monumental faculty and accommodation buildings next door. In its system of proportions, it aims at the tangible, the intelligible, the conceivable - while in its form it represents the abstract, the scientific, the conceivable. Close-to-human proportions and researcher spirituality. Division.

Marcel Ferencz divided the basic body of the perfect cubic shape into a (almost) perfect group of nine-spaced space forms. A steel support structure is drawn in a 6 × 6 raster on a cube with an edge length of nearly 15 meters. The order, which is very measured in the floor plan, is modulated in terms of height, the closed and open spaces of the two-storey building are located in the lower half of the cubature. The demonstration spaces of the public research building were located in the corners of the community center with the floor plan of the Greek Cross, with the same floor plan and height. The space opening with a small opeion in the central axis establishes a visual connection between the ground floor and the first floor, the physical connection is provided by a staircase in the fourth corner. Upstairs is the central management and a washroom block scaled to a larger number of visitors (both students and residents). The two levels of the façade steel grid thus occupy the lower three units, so one level of use is assigned to a one-and-a-half element division - slightly tilting the pure equilibrium formula.

The system recovers (almost) the consistent composition of confident mapping (there is a terrace above the communal space, a terrace above the demonstration space) and the engineering accuracy of the sublime positioning (not adapting to the raster of the surrounding land boundary and previous houses, but turning north along the diagonal). Compactness. The research base is an engineering lab, but also a demonstration site through public relations. The cube abstracts from the notion of “building,” but its size perceptibly conveys the closeness of the sustainable strategies that can be followed. It does not explain with its form, but with its spirituality and its visible-tactile-intelligent architectural solutions, mechanical and electrical equipment. Perceived. Thus, it emphasizes the value of the complex unit, not the traceable form.

Thus, the condensed physical “message” (thermal insulation thickness, airtight openings, mobile-variable shielding, solar collector and solar cell automation and manual control) can remain mentally “dense” (not to mention the passive house concept). The house can thus be composed in an abstract way, but in an abstract way. The cube, the nine-part, the strict functional order, the raster mesh, the presence of industrial materials highlight this surplus - while bringing the energy aspects of sustainability closer to the human (scale) with their scale. And the almost (!) Compact order dissolves to our delight with a necessary, consistent, but ultimately sensitive game: the sliding panels move forward in a plane - and that's not how the house becomes abstract.
