The students of the BSc 3rd year Small public building planning semester participating in the instruction taking place in the studio became acquainted with a unique planning philosophy methodology.

The first step of the research

In the scope of the semester’s task, the head instructor gave the students a geometric body with a determined base area, precisely delimited by its sides. The students had to place their buildings in this theoretical spatial body /36*36*12 m/, freely forming their functional programs with a much smaller size than that of the spatial body. All the students had to build on the site. The task was similar to a scattered development, where the development line, plot border, building height all delimit the planner’s freedom. In the task it was specified that the borders of the space had to be touched, the theoretical space wall had to be filled in as they saw fit. The space formation was started with modelling, where the precise parameters of the comprehensive space dimension were also observed. The students completed their models. Their single-storey, exciting geometric studies with a unique structure became remarkable architectural space creations in themselves.

The second step of the research

The following happened with the spatial designs, the height, contour lines of which precisely agreed with each other. They had to place their spatial creations on top of each other. In this way a 17-storey, 2.04-m building complex was created, the architecture of which is a game of chance. Its structure is like a huge totem pole.

The third step of the research

The students recognised the structural and visual experience lying within each other’s structures, they approached each other’s creations with piety and respect. They knew that without each other their own creation would not rise up either. The students did not want to go home, suddenly no one was in a hurry. Hopefully they felt the architectural possibility, perhaps, for a moment, they recognised the grandiosity of joint work.

Summary

The most important element of the strategy was that initially the students did not know that they would be building their creations on each other.  After understanding their creations on one occasion, the multiplied tower-like experience strengthened the architectural wonder, their faith projected into it. If the strategic decision giving the program is simple and provides a high level of individual creator’s freedom, then the participants observe the rules of the game voluntarily. The research will continue in 2011 with further experiments. (Marcel Ferencz DLA)
